The Lethargy of the Left Opens Space for Populist Protest Mobilisations

I'm sharing here fragments from an interview I gave for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) – “The Lethargy of the Left Opens Space for Populist Protest Mobilisations” („Летаргията на лявото отваря място за популистки протестни мобилизации“), launched on the Hristo Botev Programme – “Хоризонт до обед”, aired 14 March 2025

I was Interviewed by Yuliana Kornazheva on the protest repertoire in Bulgaria, and the rise of far-right movements in the context of a weakened left.

"Усещането за задкулисие, рухналото доверие във върховенството на правото и корупцията са фрустрации, които продължават вече 35 години. Този извод прави социалният антрополог Роберта Колева от Центъра за изследване на демокрацията. Според нея така се обезсилва вярата в демократичните принципи, а тези фрустрации се канализират в различни типове недоволство и протест.

Тя описа т.нар. протестен репертоар и открои "потенциален капан в колективната съпротива в рециклирането на едни и същи протестни репертоари, което в България го виждаме".

Лозунгът "Мафия" се използва от различни групи, които канализират недоволството си по различен начин, а тези фрустрации се използват от групи с различен политически език, посочи тя.

В българската протестна култура има конструиране на различни типове протестиращи – едните: интелигентни, млади, мислещи и другите – вулгарни, невъзпитани, податливи на манипулация, с комунистическо мислене. Към едните отношението е позитивно, към другите – негативно, като често нещата се свеждат до цивилизационен сблъсък, коментира Роберта Колева в предаването "Хоризонт до обед".

"Много често имаме обвинения от различни типове посоки. Т. нар. безплатно мразещи и другите – платени от Русия или Америка, тулупи, хуни, еничари, родоотстъпници."

Проявата на крайнодесни протестни мобилизации е характерна в глобален мащаб, отчита Колева. Според нея причина за възхода на крайнодесните говорители е и отслабването и дискредитирането на лявото в глобален аспект.

Проекти като "Величие" в България са възможни заради летаргията на лявото, отбеляза социалният антрополог.

"Недоволството на хората, поначало често провокирано от икономически въпроси, бива канализирано и отклонявано през  такива културни войни с послания като "Вън мигрантите", "Да направим Америка отново велика". Тъй като няма заявено ляво, което да говори на обикновените хора, на негово място се наместват лидери като Тръмп, партии като "Възраждане" и "Величие", които продават на несигурните граждани популистки решения, опаковани в културни и ценностни рамки."

Сред обясненията за крайнодесните мобилизации Роберта Колева вижда и "дезинформационните наративи".

“The sense that decisions are made behind the scenes, the collapse of trust in the rule of law, and corruption are frustrations that have persisted for 35 years now. This is the conclusion drawn by the social anthropologist Roberta Koleva from the Center for the Study of Democracy. According to her, this weakens faith in democratic principles, and these frustrations are channeled into different types of discontent and protest.

She described the so-called protest repertoire and highlighted a ‘potential trap in collective resistance in the recycling of the same protest repertoires—something we see in Bulgaria,’ she said.

The slogan “Mafia” is used by different groups that channel their dissatisfaction in different ways, and these frustrations are used by groups with different political languages, she noted.

In Bulgarian protest culture there is a construction of different types of protesters—some are seen as intelligent, young, and thoughtful, while others are seen as vulgar, ill-mannered, susceptible to manipulation, and possessing a communist mindset. Attitudes toward the first group are positive and toward the second negative, and things are often reduced to a civilizational clash, Roberta Koleva commented on the program *“Horizon until Noon.”*

“Very often we have accusations coming from different directions—the so-called haters for free, and the others—paid by Russia or America; ‘louts,’ ‘huns,’ ‘janissaries,’ ‘traitors to the nation.’”

Koleva notes that the emergence of far-right protest mobilizations is characteristic on a global scale. In her view, one reason for the rise of far-right spokespersons is also the weakening and discrediting of the left in global terms.

Projects like “Velichie” in Bulgaria are possible because of the left’s lethargy, the social anthropologist noted.

“People’s discontent—often initially provoked by economic issues—gets channeled and diverted through such culture wars with messages like ‘Out with the migrants,’ ‘Make America great again.’ Because there is no clearly articulated left that speaks to ordinary people, leaders like Trump, and parties like ‘Vazrazhdane’ and ‘Velichie’ step into its place, selling insecure citizens populist solutions packaged in cultural and value frameworks.”

Among the explanations for far-right mobilizations, Roberta Koleva also points to ‘disinformation narratives'.”
